Maserati Levante

A few weeks ago, we exclusively brought you the Rs 1.65 Crore price point that the Maserati Levante would be launched at. While these prices were set before the increase in GST rates, expect the new launch prices to be around the Rs 1.80 Crore mark. And with the official launch just around the corner, we have some more information on the Italian automaker's plans for the SUV in India. The Italian automaker will only launch the Levante initially with a diesel engine in India. The more powerful petrol engines will only make an appearance in the SUV in 2018 and will be available in the standard or the 'S' variant which offers more power.

The diesel engine on offer is a 3-litre, turbochared V6 that makes 271 bhp and 600 Nm of peak torque. The motor is mated to Maserati's Q4 all-wheel-drive setup and an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The diesel engine takes the Maserati Levante from 0-100 kmph in 6.9-seconds and on to a top speed of 230 kmph. The diesel engine also features a sport mode, which quickens up the gearshifts and opens up valves in the exhaust system that gives the car a slightly sportier exhaust note.
The petrol version, which will be introduced next year, will also get a V6 engine but with two turbochargers. The 3-litre motor will be available in two states of tune. The standard version gets 345 bhp and 500 Nm of peak torque with a 0-100 kmph time of 6-seconds and a top speed of 251 kmph. The Levante S will get 424 bhp and 580 Nm of peak torque. The 100 kmph mark will be dispensed off in just 5.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 264 kmph. The Levante petrol will also get a sports exhaust system that just like the one on the diesel, can open up a set of valves for a sportier exhaust note.

The Maserati Levante currently tops out with the 424-horsepower S but a high-performance GTS is being developed as an alternative to the likes of the BMW X6 M, Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe and Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
Prototypes for the Levante GTS are already out testing. The vehicle will come with the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 found in the Quattroporte GTS, whose output for the United States is a stout 523 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.
The Levante GTS should also come with an 8-speed automatic, all-wheel drive, and a host of chassis mods for sportier dynamics than what the Levante S offers.
According to Autocar, the Levante GTS will bow next year, meaning we’ll likely see it arrive for the 2019 model year.
Beyond the Levante GTS, we should see a Levante plug-in hybrid join the fold. The gasoline-electric SUV was confirmed by former Maserati CEO Harald Wester a year ago and is expected to feature the same setup found in the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid.
The setup consists of a 3.6-liter V-6 paired with a dual-motor transmission. Powering the electric motors is a 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion which enables the Pacifica to travel up to 30 miles on electric power alone. The Levante plug-in hybrid should deliver similar performance.
The addition of the Levante plug-in hybrid is part of Maserati’s plan to transform its lineup into a fully electrified one starting from the 2019 model year. As part of the plan, Maserati is also thought to be readying an electric car based on its Alfieri sports car concept unveiled in 2014.
